Default Paulowinia blocks

So you have seen what I am doing with wood...... pretty simple.
I am doing it in balasa when I can find it at Hobby Lobby.
But i had been reading about Paulowinia having teh same basic properties as Balsa and its twice as strong> This would be great for making better whittled dolls and bigger versions too.
Does anyone know where i can get: Paulowinia in a 4" X 6 " X 12 inch block and 3"x3"12" blocks down to 1/2"x1/2 x 24 inch blocks like whjat balasa comes in???

Hi Julie!

Welcome to the forum!

Decoycarve (Goody) tipped me off to Groff's Lumber in Pennsylvania. They carry a variety of domestic woods including paulownia. Her's a link:

Groff & Groff Lumber, Flooring, Exotic Lumber, Domestic Lumber

I haven't gotten paulownia from them but I did order poplar. And the quality and the price was good--plus mail order was convenient since I live in NJ.

Hope that helps!

Bob L

P.S. In case you don't know the lumber terminology, check the glossary.

Hi Julie.

I don't know about where to buy it, but I was given a nice hunk of Pawlonia stump by a friend...you can see the results on the swan deke post of Animals & Birds here. Thanks for the link to Groff & Groff Bob!

Angry Re: Paulowinia blocks

I tried the link but it takes me to the pricing page and every time I try to go to the home page my computer times out.

TreeWizard,
There's sort of a slide show on the home page--so, if you're using dial-up, that might be the reason it's taking a bit to load. Otherwise, I'm not sure what the problem is.

Here's their contact info. if that helps:
