I like 80 grit sandpaper glued to a scrap piece of wood so it's nice and flat

i usually clean off my gardening shears once or twice a year, that pretty well takes a lot off, effectively cleaning it to bare cardboard

I started power sharpening with paper wheels. I just used a coarse sandpaper on the wheel while it was running. That made quick work of cleaning it off. Then, I covered it with white glue, and reapplied grit. Used to do this about once a year.

Paper wheels are a great way to learn to use power to sharpen and hone carving tools. On a slow motor, the paper wheels tend to not overheat the tools being sharpened.
