i am currently carving a nativity scene in butternut. i have finished several pieces, i just finished them with minwax antique oil. it seems alot of the small details are hard to see on butternut once i put the oil on it. i am making the figures 3-4 inches tall, using reduced patterns from helen gibsons book. i will have to be brave and post the finished pics, but you all humble me daily with the gallery postings...

I love butternut as well. I found a decent stash of butternut at a Woodcraft in NC a while ago, but their prices aren't very good. If anyone knows a good source, please share!

my fireplace mantel is butternut, and i have a chunk lying outside that is like a 8' 4x4. I have tried carving it but find it a little hard to work with, like oak.
glad I saw this thread, I wont put it in the fireplace now. I didnt know it was getting rare.
