Default Olive Wood

The Cleveland area Woodcraft store has Olive wood marked down as part of an email sale. This sale may be at all of their stores but I only know for sure at this location. I was able to get several 2 x 2 x 12 pieces that were originally $29.99 for $10.99 and a 1 x 1 x 12 originally $6.99 for $2.99. I have always wanted to carve olive wood but found it to be pricey and hard to find. The stores have pallets of this and several other species. Some of the Nativity scenes posted on the forum in the past are beautiful and olive wood seems perfect for one.

I have made several cooking spoons from olive - nice looking wood with great grain, but hard as nails. I've used power carving on it, not gouges and knives.

Ditto what birthday Claude said. Beautiful but extremely HARD. Unless you like hand carving and sharpening frequently, it's best done with power. But, the grain is awesome.

Does the wood smell like olives? Just curious... I assume it is the tree from which olives grow?
