I was at our local Habitat for Humanity store the other day and there was a huge 12 foot 6x6 timber in the reclaimed wood section. It was removed from an old barn damaged in a storm. Not sure of the type of wood. I though about buying it but decided not to do so. When I decided to go back the next day, it was already gone. I wonder how it would have carvef?... (if I ever see another one) greg |

Greg, I've carved an old beam into two pieces, and although I am pleased with the results, I would recomend caution in doing so.. My beam was old (200 year+ white pine) and was downright nasty to work with. http://www.woodcarvingillustrated.co...ecapod_950.JPG But if you have loads of patience and don't mind working around or with splits and pitch pockets, go for it.....that old wood has grain you can't find in second growth timber. Come to think of it, I did a pair of brook trout in some ancient pine, too, and the grain patterns in these were quite pleasing.. Pine Brookie - Woodcarving Illustrated Photo Gallery Al |

Thanks Al, if I get another chance to get one, I wont hesitate. I'll just plan for a long slow project of some sort. greg |
