Welcome to the forum!

I'm in central NJ and I use mail order from Heinecke in Wisconsin for basswood and butternut.

http://www.heineckewood.com/

Tell Dale what you want, he'll ship it, and while you're carving it, you'll probably get a bill, and you send a check back to him. A lot of people use him--great prices, great wood, great people to deal with.

I go to my local lumberyard but he only has 3/4" and 1" basswood, not great quality, and limited amount. I also use eastern white pine--my preference to carve--what I can get from Lowes or HD and glue lam what I need. Works for me.

I've also used Groff & Groff in Maryland--I got poplar from them mail order--they have quite a selection of different woods.

If you're up in Northern NJ, you might have a better chance getting something. There's not many lumbermills around here any more. I'd have a better chance with getting free wood--old pallets, firewood, etc.

Good luck!

Works for me to, lam. to size, and go for it , one advantage I find, when you lam. the chances of cracking becomes minimal. I have most of my stuff in a room that's heated with a wood stove and knock on wood, no pun intended, no cracks I all so leave the back of the carving, bare it lets it breath.

Semper Fi.

Welcome! I'm also from northern NJ, although not a hand carver, I can certainly point you in the direction of a sawmill or two. Also, there is a very good woodcarving school in Wayne NJ, that sells shop tools, wood, books etc. They offer classes, which fill very fast. If your interested I'll try to find the name of the school, I know I have an old business card in my mess of paperwork somewhere around here!
