| | I Need a piece of Butternut. Hey folks,
I have a request from a family for a small sign for their annual family reunions. Their Matriarch has a strong connection to Butternut, I understand they lived in a grove of them, and asked for a family sign to be carved, just with their name and some Celtic designs. When I discussed woods with them, the issue came up regarding the Butternut and I have enough to do the letters, and designs, but not a full piece for the sign. Can any of our Canadian carvers help me out, for a source for a piece of Butternut, dimensions 18" X 8" X 1", or there abouts? I'd like to do the entire sign / carving in it, if I can buy the wood, if not I'll have to be happy with the Basswood that I have and glue on the pieces of Butternut.

I have some butternut slabs in the shed I could probably rough you out a piece with those dimentions. Do you have a thickness planer that you could square it up with let me know and I will get at it right away. BTW no cost I would be happy to do it for you.

| | Re: I Need a piece of Butternut. Colin,..... thanks for the offer, I appreciate it. I'm still trying to locate some commercially, but it's not something that shows up often or consistantly in the businesses I usually get my wood from. I'd accept that piece, only if you let me at least pay for the shipping/bus. (No,sorry, I don't have a thickness planer.) But could square it on the bandsaw.
Hi Ho....the lady grew up in a grove of Butternut, but no longer lives there. A sentimental memory thing, the family just would like her to connect to it I suppose!

| | Re: I Need a piece of Butternut. A pattern no, but there is a web site that shows you how to tie one, that's all I used to do mine. http://www.igkt.net/beginners/monkeys-fist.html
What I did was to tie one and used it as a "live" model!
Worked okay.
