Ron, my brother in law had a big limb blow off his mulberry tree some years back, i took a 4 foot section and painted the ends and air dried it for a year. the log was oval shaped 18 inches through at the widest and 10 inches at its narrowest in the oval.. I slabbed it up to make some small jewelery boxes about 1/2 thick finished pained. then carved some patterns on the finished boxes, but i did carve a pair of pistol grips for my 22 ruger convertible. from what i remember it was about like carving ash, hard and dry, places were even splintery, when cut against the grain. bright yellow wood beautiful color but the color soon went to chestnut and darkened to deep mahogany but left some underlying yellow streaks deep in the wood. Ive never been able to stop the color change its something that happened in time, |
