Default Re: Live in SLC Utah where to get wood?

4/4 is NOT a 1" square block. 4/4 only refers to the THICKNESS of a piece of stock. You can get 4/4 any width you need (say 4/4 x 6"x60"). That would be 1" rough-cut thickness 6" wide by 60" long.

5/4 would be 1 1/4" rough-cut thickness
6/4 would be 1 1/2" rough-cut thickness.

4/4 finished lumber would be the rough-cut lumber planed smooth, usually on 2 sides and would be designated 4/4 S2S or 4/4 smooth two sides. The edges will not normally be planed. 4/4 S4S would indicate finished on all four sides, edges included.

Hope this helps more than confuses.

Al

There appears to be at least one supplier in the area. You can compare the prices to Heineke - MANY references on this site.
I called "MacBeath Hardwood" here locally and they sell basswood @ 3.91 a board foot.

I think this is what I can get a 3x3x12 piece for basswood for locally.

Does this seem reasonable?

If you are getting northern basswood for $2.93 per board foot I'd say that's a decent price.
I pay $2.50 per board foot for rough-cut basswood here locally in Vermont. They don't normally stock 4/4 in wide pieces though.
To get wide pieces (>5") you gotta get it as 8/4...essentially 2 inches thick...
but to answer your question: $2.93 board foot is a good price, competitive.
