Default Linden wood/Basswood

I am assuming that these are these are still the same tree. While out collecting sap for maple syrup friend came across what he says is Lindin wood tree that is down. Said It has been down for 2 years. It is about 38 inches in diameter. Is it worth the time and effort for me to try to harvest it for carving. The tree is in Ohio. TOM H

Maybe, but be prepared to be disappointed.

Basswood spoils real quick after it's been down. 2 years is a long time.

But, nothing ventured is nothing gained! Good luck!

If its been directly on the ground it may be shot and not worth the time. I guess you could see how far the rot has taken hold and make your mind up after that.
I know a person had cut oak and stacked it and was directly on the ground. It had been sitting like that for 3 yrs and it was all shot. I tried to get rid of it to a sawmill and he said no way in &&^^%%$ would he mess with it.

Last summer I got about a dozen basswood logs with a load of curly maple logs.

The maple took precedence over the basswood as far as getting sawed. It was real hot, temps. in the 80's by the time I got to sawing the basswood, they had already started to blue stain. Luckily, the stain hadn't gone very deep and I was able to get some nice stock.

Wont be long for break up here! I know a few loggers that are getting worried about it. Hows it your way in New York?

We've been having a spring thaw since Dec.

January was the warmest on record.

February got cold but then we had heavy lake snows, so the ground didn't refreeze.

So unless your cutting on high ground, you're stuck in the mud.

The logger that I deal with has had a bad year so far. I hope he doesn't try to make it up on the logs that I have ordered from him!

Actually, I start looking for some shade when it gets over 70*.

A few years ago I had the priviledge of enjoying your climate in July while meandering along Route 66 on the motor cycle.

Pics where taken in Oatman AZ.

#1- ing off at the Oatman Hotel.
#2- View from the hotel porch, to bad the cages ruined the scene.
