Default Large Blocks

I'm just starting the detail on a Neo-classical style carving (5" x 17")
of the life size white marble sculpture known as "The Greek Slave"
by Hiram Powers in 1843.

The Greek Slave is my first realistic carving and I'm really enjoying
this project, to help with this carving I bought two books by Ian Norbury
"Carving Classic Female Faces" & "Carving Classic Female Figures" and they
have been a real inspiration, I'm already looking forward to the next project.

I would like to try a life size bust next but I'm 'googled out!' looking
for a source for large blocks of wood. If I glue boards together to make
up the size needed what kind of wood would cause the least grain conflict for
a natural finish?

I will second the Heinecke. Best wood I have ever experienced, and great prices.

Bill, I really like the look of Burl, thanks for the web site.

Thanks Dave and Bob, I've been wanting to try their wood anyway so I called Dale today and ordered a 4" x 9" x 18" block and several smaller blocks, he said he could glue up any size I wanted and it would not be noticeable.
