Default Just like christmas!

Today i bought a huge plank (rough) of kiln dried Spanish Cedar, 4" thick and about 12" wide by 8 feet long.

I also bought a 13" wide by 3" thick by 8 foot plank of tropical American mahogany.

And, i have 220 board feet of 10/4 butternut coming this week

I should be set for carving wood for a little while!

Andrew,

Wow that does sound like Christmas! You got all treats for Halloween there. I'm a huge fan of the butternut although I've only carved a small piece or two so far, but I have two fairly good sized pieces in the planning stage. Have fun with your new treasures!!! I'll be watching to see what you do with these windfalls.

Well, to be fair, i was in the wood specialty shop i deal with for stuff i cant get from my regular lumber dealers... And decided, i better buy a few things i dont have access to regularly.

I will use some of that wood for furniture pieces, turning, but of course being nice and thick, it will make great carving stock as well.

Years ago, when my father could still buy Honduran Mahogany, i carved it a few times and it was a dream. Now it isnt available here, and tropical American mahog. is the nearest true mahogany. Comapred to the African mahogany i usually get (khaya) it is nice and light, uniform grain and works like butter - but you pay for it.

But, you only live once and my wife gave the OK so...

You can test out your new knives and carving tools on all that.
