American Holly can be hard to come by. It grows real slow. The grain is very tight and pretty hard. I was given a board about 7/8" thick last year and have carved several spoons out of it. Its very white, and carves nice.Make sure your hands are clean. If you cann't find any drop me a message. What I have is only 7/8 thick and about 3'' wide and about 2' long, Don't know what size you are looking for. I know Bill has more in a bundle, I just don't know how much a board foot it runs for. Most of what I saw was the same thickness and as wide as what I have. The lenght is around 8 feet.
A piece or two around 1"x2"x2" would work for what I want which is just to try carving in the round with it. I do some small work so would use this to carve a miniature or two. The main purpose is to see how holly works, whether I like it. If I do then I will look for some bigger pieces.
Holly carves beautifully, it is hard wood, but has little grain problems to worry about. The edges left are crisp and fine. I use very small pieces in my ship modelling, but Holly is a choice wood to carve in that application.
The fluted pillars between the stern windows in the attached picture are carved in Holly.
