Holly is hard to carve and hard to find in any size. I use it on my ship models but the pieces I have are tiny in comparisom. It works splendidly in that application, very crisp, clear defination and holds detail extremely well.

I have purchased some from East Coast Hardwood Specialty in Halifax, N.S., (that's in Canada) this summer, but you might have some luck with a local wood specialty supplier. Mine was 1" x about 8" x 4' long, so there must be a sourse somewhere for it.

Best of luck.

Bob

I hope you snatched up that holly wood (hehe - hollywood) anyway? Many's the time when I've bought/acquired wood without any ideas about what to do with it. Inspiration may just come at a later date, that's all....

Any chance he could cut a small piece ,pop in mail and send collect,,,,will be very happy to pay him for time and trouble...10 inches, 6 by 6 maul splint, in a couple of plastic bags with some wet paper towels.. I can always gamble with zapping the wood over December in the micro wave...I would rather have that log, then 3 same size in bass wood Cordially NAD

For the planks of a Viking ship I'd recommend Mahogany, or Beech , they both bend and steam well. For the ribs, perhaps Boxwood, or Pear. Even a good hard piece of Cherry will do.

I'd love to have access to that Holly you mentioned, it makes a great contrasting wood for Ebony, Cherry, Mahogany on ships.

Hello Nad,
You don't say where you are located but holly grows plentiful in the Carolinas. I visit family there and during a visit to a well know Bowl turner who owns 54 acres of forest in the area, Lissie Oland, she was kind enough to give me a nice chunk of holly which I have been hoarding for something special. Back before I was a wood carver, someone tried to give me a holly LOG.....geez what I wouldn't give for it now....it was huge. Pieces that large are rare even there but you could probably get holly without too much trouble. This was in the Murphy, NC area.

Thanks for the help and comments..I may have found a piece locally that might work..However, if what I hope to knock out works, then I may go to strictly Walnut and Holly for several months. Use of the contrasting woods, including Cherry, has a lot of possibilities...The small Holly tree in my back yard has to come out.Diameter is slightly over three inches(?)..So Bob, if there are pieces that will work for your models in it,no problem....I can cut, micro wave until dry, and send to you.. By the way, I think I am getting old.Got back from a show, went into garage..Wanted to get at a piece of Walnut for a friend to carve..Had to move a 6 foot by 10 inch by 18 inch piece, and it was a major effort..Three years ago, no problem..Either old, tired, or needing to find the old Charles Atlas Dynamic Tension course to build up muscles..Fact is , I haven't seen any muscles around lately either..,Cordially Nad
