Smile I have a hard time finding wood!

Hi Everyone,

I have an awful time finding nice clear wood, in the sizes that I need. Most of my projects are pretty big. I can't seem to find blocks more than 10 to 12'' long, and they are never wide enough! I am know trying to search the internet. Is that a good idea? Does anyone have any good suggestions for me?

,

Ali

I agree with Thomas! Give them a call and tell them exactly what you want. They'll get it. And the price will not be beat. Tom H

Go with Thomp's suggestion, you won't go wrong. It's the ONLY place I'll buy.

An alternative is of course to glue up some wood to make a block as large as you need and in the general shape. As large wood is becoming scarse, gluing up is becoming more common. Lots of information here on gluing up, but the basics are perfectly flat meeing surfaces, glued with a good waterproof glue, and clamped.

Good luck,

Bob

Alice,
I believe that Heinecke if requested might be able to do a glue up as well...great folks to do business with!!

I ordered a box of various sized pieces from Heinecke and am very pleased with the wood I got. According to their web site "We carry a large supply of block basswood and plaques for relief and chip carving, as well as thin wood for ornaments and other specialties. Remember, at Heinecke Wood Products you can order any size block you want with no minimum size order."

And, the price of the wood, not counting shipping, is about 1/3 the price at most major retail wood suppliers. If you order a fair-sized amount, the shipping cost per stick is pretty small.

I want 6" x 6" wood which is almost impossible to find so I call Heinecke and Dale glues two 3 x 6 pieces together (for me - both 48" long) and they are PERFECT. It's almost impossible to find the glue line of that enormous piece of basswood and I certainly never find even a tiny gap.

Some of the chunks have been laying in my shop for 3 years now and they are still in perfect condition.

Thanks everyone, Right now I laminate to get the right size I need. I am just hoping to find blocks long enough. I checked out the website. They listed blocks up to 12'.

I have written them to see if they have anything longer. I need 18" to 20".

Thank you all so much for our help. Ali
