Re: Glueing Wood for Carving? I have used glue ups on occassion when I'm feeling cheap and want to use 2 X 4's from the lumber yard. I run the pieces through the planer so I get a good fit and I try to match the grain. For glue, I use yellow carpenters glue. I try to make the joints on the sides of the carving that will not be the prominent side. All that being said, if the joint is good and the grain somewhat matched, it will be barely noticable even under close scrutiny. I painted all of mine with washes, but not really necessary if the glue up is done properly. Take a look at some of Marv Kaisersatt's work. All of his that are of a size to require it are done with glue ups. He does all (that I know of) of his pieces out of a single piece of wood (glue up counts as single piece). Just go the the cca website, click on members, then click on Marv Kaisersatt and there are some examples. |
