A lot of carvers use lacquer (Deft)...some also dip the carving in boiled linseed oil after painting. Bob Duncan Wood Carving Illustrated |

Walt, ...search for posts on BLO or Boiled Linseed Oil, a lot of us caricature carvers use BLO oil with a small amount of Burnt Unber oil paint over watered down acrylics. For an example look under caricatures where I posted "another wisecrack", he was painted w/ watered down acrylics and then dunked in BLO... ...still others swear by Deft, a flat finish that will eliminate the shine...

Walt.....Not to be a contrarian but I would stay away from BLO. It has a tendency of collecting dust. If you want to kill the sheen of Polyurethane remember this rule: The thicker the paint the more the shine. Doesn't matter what type of finish you use, varnish, poly, laquer, oilbased, whatever. To manage the sheen when using Poly use a paper towel to wipe off those areas that are heavily painted. You can usually tell by coming back to your piece after you've cleaned your brush. It it's shiney just gently wipe off the excess. DO NOT use toilet paper or a cloth as each will leave lint behind. Paper towels work great. Another thing you can use is Testors DulCoat, available in Hobby Lobby or other hobby stores, to lightly spritz the areas that shine once the poly has thoroughly dried. Don't go to heavy with this as I will blush on you if you get it too thick.

I use deft, it dry's very quick You can get it in a spray can or in bulk in a regular can. I get it in bulk and spray it on with a spraygun or airbrush. |

You can get Krylon Krystal Klear poly in satin or gloss and also Deft in Gloss, Satin, or semi gloss, I have both but tend to use the poly on sticks and canes......probably because the Deft dries faster and I don't want to wait..lol
