Does anybody know where I can order wood of the internet. This is confusing me as I know you need special wood to carve, however I can not seem to find it. Is their a good UK website that you can order wood from.
Welcome to the site! What type of wood are you looking for? There are many sources listed here in other threads for wood - mostly in the US.
For someone here to answer you question, it would help to know what you like to carve and/or what type of wood you are looking for. There are MANY EXCELLENT carvers in the UK, so I'm sure that there's adequate suppliers there also.
You don't need a 'special' wood to carve on. some are easier to carve than others, and some of the most interesting work I have ever seen was made out of some very tough and/or junky wood.
Is there no maple anywhere handy to where you live? Know anybody with a fireplace that might let you snoop through their woodpile?
Aren't there any woodworking/cabinet/millworking shops near you? I just picked up 350 board feet of 1 1/4 inch and 2 1/4 basswood 12 inches wide 8 ft long and 40 board feet of mahogany ,10 ft long at a couple of local cabinet shops. Many of these shops also sell their cut offs that they can't use but are great for carvings.Check them out. Here are some pics of what I just picked up
