Default Cucumber Wood?

Has anyone ever carved any cucumber wood? I have a friend who has a big log that he is going to get sawed up. He is not sure if it is basswood or cucumber tree. People have told him both. I was hoping it was basswood. If it's not is the cucumber any good for carving. He has given me several pieces of cherry and a piece of walnut but they are very hard. Thanks,
Thomas

I think that's a type of Magnolia, and should be similar to some of the poplar for carving (not the aspen type poplar)

The wood sure don't taste like cucumber! I've sawn a bunch of it over the years.

Here's a link for more info.

No, I just sawed it into lumber to be made into molding. I'd get a truck load of tulip logs and sometimes there would be a couple of cucumber logs in the load. The lumber was all sold as tulip or yellow poplar.

I wouldn't turn any away!

I can now say, yes I have.

I dug around in my wood stash today and found a 2 1/2" thick plank of cucumber that I had set aside a long time ago.

I made a few cuts with a gouge and found that it cuts a lot like firm basswood.

I have been going to carve an elf character based on a Norman Rockwell painting that caught my eye, I think I'll carve him out of cucumber.

Here's a cucumber tree. I didn't know we had them in Ohio, but this one is in an arboretum in northern Ohio. Mike

I've got a couple of Cucumber tree saplings stashed back for walking sticks. Guess I'll dig them out of the pile.
