Smile Cottonwood

CROSSED POST FROM 'BEGINNER FORUM'
I live in Prescott Valley, AZ. I'm told the cottonwood type we have here and thoughout most of Arizona is called 'Fremont' cottonwood.
We have a large stand near our home that follows a creek. I recently harvested some limbs that were laying on the ground. Brought them home and divided two of the limbs into thirds. I'm presently carving one of the thirds, and find the wood just terrific for carving. It's my first in the round carve all the others have been started from a block in a corner. Will share when finished.
I love the idea I can just go and pick-up dry limbs, take them home and carve away.
This wood has a really nice natural color and I did see the 'star' in the center core.
I do have a question actually four...LOL
1. Can you remove the cottonwood exposed root without damaging the tree?
2. Has anyone used cottonwood panels for relief carving or pyrography?
3. What type of finish/varnish do you like to use on your completed cottonwood?
4. What finish do you use if your cottonwood carving is to be out of doors?
Thanks,
Kathy
