Default Cherry Wood

Is Cherry wood a good wood to carve on?

I have a friend who has an abundance of it and would like to know if anyone is interested in it. Right now its not cut to any perticular length.

Marci....Cherry wood is a premier wood to carve!!! It is harder than Basswood , but on par with Walnut. It has a rich warm colour that deepens with sunlight. I have done lots of work in Cherry and it is one of my favorites. Holds an edge well so you can get some great detail with it, it can chip, so be careful. Check on the link below and check out the two dragon canes and the hawk cane, they are done in Cherry.

Great wood, great for canes, carvings or furnature, the tool chest in the link below is also done in Cherry.

Great stuff, and the pieces that are too small to carve work outstaniding in the smoker. Even the tiny limbs.

I went to a farm Auction here in Tennessee today, and bought a pile of cherry and a pile of cedar! They're both in 2x12's, 4x4's, 4x6's, 6x6's and all the cherry is 14' long! The cedar is mostly 6x6 post length and 8x8's. I got 12 cherry 4x4's plus 8 or 9 2x12's and a couple 6x6's, all 14' lengths, for $100.00! The guy I was bidding against looked at me like I'd lost my mind to pay that for a pile of boards They were all stored inside the barn for a few years! I think there were about 15 cedar 6x6's and 8x8's and I paid $80 for them. All the wood was cut on that farm.
Can hardly wait to start something with them, but haven't unloaded them yet!

Wade, that's a great buy! Congratulations. Hope you have a nice dry place to store it. You just need some Walunt to add to your collection and you're in carver heaven.....better known as Tennessee!

Geez Wade! The cherry trees I have seen aren't as big as the lumber you got! Thought everything "big" came from Texas! LOL

Bob,
I have 4 full-cut 4x4's of walnut 16' long harvested in Indiana about 106 years ago! Think they're seasoned enough yet?
Hi_Ho,
Arizona cherry? I know of acres and acres of walnuts just south of Tucson, I think it's Green Valley. English walnuts. Incredible groves!
