Buckeye wood

Has anyone carved wood from the buckeye tree? Was it cured/green? I've heard it is comparable to basswood. What was your experience? If it is comparable to basswood that will save me lots of money, got tons of it here in Kentucky.

I have carved some in Buckeye. It is comparable to bass......both are wood (it's all relative isn't it?). Actually, it's harder and has more color (for the lack of a better description). That being said, it IS a good carving wood, but not as easy to carve as bass.

I have not carved it green, but air kiln dryed. I am not sure how it will react (checking) if carved wet. If you have lots of it, by all means give it a try -> and let us know how it works!

Mail Walker, Buckeye is like basswood but it has a variety of colors streaking throughout. I think mostly blues and grays. I have carved it with a knife few times and it does cut very nice while green or dry. A friend carved a stylized horse from a short log 12"long and 10" wide. I saw it finished and dried and I don't believe there were any noticeble cracks. Pretty wood.
