Yes this is the same buckeye that produced the nut that your grandad kept in his pocket for luck . Just wondering if anyone has ever carved it and what you can tell me about its carving properties Thanks for your help |

I've carved buckeye, and think if I could only have one wood, I would take it over basswood. Can't really explain why, it just carves nice, takes detail, seems more consistant then basswood. I've only had one problem with it, my last batch I bought had wood borers in it, made for some interesting carving. First showed up last fall when I was putting the eyes in a santa that I needed to complete, and the holes came right thru his one eye. The other wood I use is butternut. I would give the buckeye a try if you can get some. Bob |

I remember the buckeye nuts from when I was a very little kid but haven't seen one since! :-[ I have a piece of butternut, but it is such a beautiful wood, I hate to carve on it LOL...some day maybe I can take a trip east and pickup some of the really nice woods you people have back there! We have cactus, and yucca and cactus and mesquite and cactus and .....ha ha
