Let's see some more BIG basswood logs, though.

| | Re: Basswood Log Those look to be red pine logs about 18 to 20 inches in dia. (judging from the dust evacuator pipes which are typically 10" dia). Is that at the Carey mill up near Channing?
That Woodmizer LT40 will handle a log up to 36" diameter, and it looks like they are taking about 4" off one side to get it on the carriage. That would make that log at least 40" if they only scarfed one side to get it on. Only that one looks to be around 30", but maybe it just wasn't straight enough to get on the mills carriage without straigtening one side. You just don't see many basswood logs over 24" diameter any more.

Al | this is basswood, I was called out to take pictures of them working that day for a website he was wanting made. He is the #1 purchaser and seller of basswood in NE Wi and the U.P of MIchigan.. He has pine , but I dont think cuts to much of it. HE supplys alot of furnature factorys, building material for construction co plus resells the logs. I have seen many many logs over 24" come into his mill and in another mill I go to.... We also have another lumber mill near Norway now as well. IN Florence a flooring manufacture is starting up . |

| | Re: Basswood Log A friend of mine with some property down near Marenisco, just asked me if I wanted a whole basswood tree, yesterday. It's standing, not down. Don't know the size of it yet, or what condition it is in, but early next month, I'll get down and take a look at it. Might just get enough basswood to keep me and a few members of our carving club in wood for a while. We have a few small, one man operation mills around that will cut it very reasonably, but all our larger mills that used to handle basswood have shut. It's nice to see a few big operations in the area still handling basswood.

| | Re: Basswood Log Al,
You already probably know how to keep it from checking as it dries, but here's what I'd recommend.
If you'll use some Anchorseal on the ends soon after cutting it down, it'll save a lot of splitting. I get it at Highland Hardware, highlandhardware.com ; their price is the best I've found and they ship fast.
Nice find!
