Yep, Dave, we live in the wrong places. Well maybe not. Love it here in SEK.
Guess I don't know what cants are. What I normanlly call cants are the sloping cut part of a log. Here in SEK and OK, they use a treated 8 x8 or bigger for their railing supports. Ya don't want to carve that stuff. Well Dave, some of them have all the luck eh?

I have sent 78 bdft to a guy in N.C it was pretty fair when you figured I charged $1.50 per bdft plus threw in a extra large piece. Shipping was around $114.00 or so. It's around $2.60 per bdft for 2 1/4 thick basswood. That is shipping and cost of wood. Prices have jumped where i got mine the last time. He is asking $3.50 3" to 4" thick basswood. If you figure what the company charge for wood it is crazy. $2.50 per 1x1x12 and times that by 12 pcs. comes out to $30.00 per bdft.

The last load of basswood logs I bought was .50/bf. These were prime sawlogs.

Now factor in the almost 100 grand I have invested in equipment (sawmill & etc.), the long wait for the thick basswood cants to dry and then factor in an almost 30% waste factor so you can have nice clear wood to carve, shipping is really a minor issue for me.

Now if I could only get the government to subsidize my operation maybe I could sell my product for less than cost.

Hi Ho, at the lumber company I buy mine from they said that there is a man who stops in once a year with a trailer and buys at least 100 bf.at a time. He does this while he is on his vacation.

Basswood is an easy wood to carve. I holds detail as well as just about any wood. The knife glides through the wood easily. Yet the wood is firm not soft or mushy.

The one drawback that I see with basswood is that it does not have an enhanced grain. What I mean is that Cedar, Oak, Maple etc all have characture through the grain. When you stain it natural the wood is beautiful. Not the case with basswood.
