Default basswood and roughout

Does anyone know where I can buy basswood or roughouts in Indiana? or does everyone order online and pay the high shipping prices?

errancy,

in order to get really good basswood you will have to order it and pay the high shipping cost. there are 2 places that sell good stock and they are:

www.heineckewood.com and

www.joescarvingwood.com

You CAN order your basswood out, or you can check around with local carving clubs and see where the members get their carving material. Don't know where you are in Indianna, but if you are up near Shipshawanna (sp) you might check with some of the hardware stores that deal with the Amish. A lot of them carve and the stores handle excess wood, etc. Seems to me there were also quite a few small mills in that area, that might just have basswood stocks. Or bump up to Lower Michigan and ask around.

You might also search for carving shows that might be nearby. They often have suppliers of wood and tools who sell their wares at the shows.

Let us know which part of the state you're in and perhaps one of us can tell you where there's a show in your part of the state.

Generally, basswood that's from the north is much better carving wood than southern-grown basswood--less grain.

we've got quite a bit of extremely nice 2 and 3 inch basswood at home and some nice 4 inch, all dried, plus some chunks of 5 inch thats just been air drying for a few months.

if you search for northern mn basswood on ebay thats the basswood i'm talking about.

and if anyone wants any larger amount of wood just send a message on ebay.
