| | Wood dye Have any of you tried the wood dye's like the great carvers from the past used to get that soft old look we sometimes desire with our carvings?
If so where are you purchasing it and how are you using it? Thanks for any suggestions or ideas you may have, Mike

| | Re: Wood dye Sliver, That clothing dye is good too from what I hear but not as easy to work with as the wood dye. I do know that a couple of traditional bow building supplier shops used to handle it in about any color you wanted. I made some self bows in my day but never tried the dyes they offered. I'll do some more checking, we aren't getting any answers here. Mike

| | Re: Wood dye Here is a good brand name that I have always heard good things about. I need to keep looking because of all my medical bills this price is a little steep for me! Hope to find something about half that price. http://www.wwforum.com/mall/briwax/water_dyes.html

| | Re: Wood dye On bad thing about the Clothing Dyes is, if you splash it on your clothing, It dyes it also. Don't ask me How I know!
Plus, it seemed to take 40 forevers to dry completely.
Used it to dye some Hemp rope before and that took forever to dry. I have heated up walnuts to get the husk off and used the collored water as a stain and it worked ok.
Hemp rope eh. I wonder if you can smoke it and get ............ Nah, I am not a smoker! |

Did you use any of the dyes yet? And if you did how bad did they raise the woodgrain?

| | Re: Wood dye Wood dye.....there is a good discussion about wood-dye in the Finishing edition of Fine Woodworking magazine, still on the news stand shelves I think. They discuss dyes vrs stains, and the benefits or drawbacks of each.

| | Re: Wood dye I think that would be $160+ per gallon! Of course, who needs a gallon...and there's probably a good price break if you buy a gallon...pricey stuff! It'd be fun to play with though! | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
