I have read some, and seen some reference to 'waxing' finished projects. Can someone tell me what kind of wax might be good for a light[ not dark] finish for Basswood. Again thanks for your time.

First time I get to respond to an inquiry, and I'm not sure about the Bass wood. I am only working with Canes and Walking Sticks/Staffs, and so far most of my finishing after sanding, steel wool, and brown paper bag..... has been with tung oil, then a couple of applications of Minwax Hardening Wax. I buff between coats with a shoe brush, then one last time with a cloth cut from a tee-shirt. This gives a very light finish, but it does bring out the grain really well. Kim |

Kim, Many thanks, more info is always better, I keep reading as much as I can, and sometimes become more confused, but it's fun along the way. I shall try your method. Pete in NC |

I recently finished a basswood carving with Howard Feed 'n Wax, which is a mixture of orange oil, beeswax, and carnuaba wax. You can see the finished product here: #16: Basswood | The Hundred Birds Project I use that Feed 'n Wax on a lot of my carvings, especially the "found wood" carvings. I think the thing I like the most is that it's dead simple to apply. I've also used Minwax paste wax, which you can get in different colors. I just used the neutral. Been a while since I've used it, and I don't have any pictures handy.

I use a butcher's block wax it darkens the wood slightly, not as much as BLO.

howards feed and wax put it on liberally and let it sit for awhile then buff it with a horsehair shoe brush bart p.s you can also buy this at home depot for about 7.00 and the bottle will last you a long time. Last edited by Bartster; 02-11-2012 at 03:33 PM. |
