I used walnut oil on a kazoo, made of redwood. Not sure if I used too much, but a day later it still feels oily. any body know how long it takes to 'dry'? Any suggestions? |

It'll take a long time... BLO and Danish Oil (and some Tung oils) have polymerization additives to help them dry quicker. Walnut oil is just like olive oil - no additives. When I put olive oil on my cooking spoons, I let it soak in overnight, then wipe off with a paper towel. Still feels a bit oily until I've washed it a couple of times with soap and water. Claude |

One thing you could try on a piece of scrap first: rub some walnut oil on it, let soak in for a few hours or even overnight, then wipe off, and re-coat with Danish Oil, or BLO. The two oils should mix ok, and the additives should help it all dry... Claude |

Walnut oil will take 3-6 months to cure...but here is a trick I use for flaxseed oiled spoons that removes the surface oil pretty well... Take the kazoo and put it beside your computer fan where the heat blows out. If your computer runs real hot keep it away....what you are looking for is gentle even heat (not much hotter than body temp). Rotate the kazoo every so often and wipe it down with a paper towel or rag. The "excess" oil will ooze out of the wood. (Make sure you dispose of this rag wet). When you are not wiping off any oil then let the kazoo cool down and it will most likely have a "dry" surface. The heat also helps cure the oil...so 3-6 months is something like 2.8-5.8 months |
