Tried Donna T's Brown Bag Trick!

I finally tried the "Brown Bag" trick for fine sanding. (It's so hard to get a brown bag now-a-days, every grocery store just wants to give you plastic!) Like some of you said, especially Donna T., it really does give a much smoother finish after priming. It's definitely an added touch!

I wasn't sure if I should do it again after the actual painting process. I was too afraid it might take the paint off. Does anyone know?

Jillsy, After paint has dried you can use the Brownbag technique also. I like to use one that I have used before. I just knock the dust off of it and wad it up again. Then put on your finish like BLO or polu U whatever you finish your carving with.
The little bride has use this technique on her crafts for years also. Smooths up wood crafts to almost a mirror finish.

The only place I get brown paper bags anymore is from the hardware store and both Ace and True Value have them here. Maybe a little shameless commercial plug for them might encourage them to keep the paper bags!

Major super market chains have done away with using Brown paper sacks. I like the the lunch size or smaller size ones as the bigger size ones seems to have sharper edges evern when wadded up. Like Dave said, True Value and Ace Hardware will put the smalled items in a small paper sack. Wally World sells the lunch size sacks I believe in numbers of 10 or 20. Takes a long time to use up that many.

Ahh, but those little lunch sacks ain't big enough for a man size lunch eh Jim?

There used to be directions on them Jim....it said "use on your carving AFTER you eat your lunch!" ha ha

Well now, you have just discovered my secret. Here all the time I thought I was the only one of a few that has used the brown bag on their carvings. I use the brown paper after I finish sanding as it removes the tiny little fuzzies and permits a nice smooth surface base for paint. I also use it to rub down after I paint....it puts on a nice patina like finish. I use acrylic paints on my carvings, so don't know if it works on lacquer, varnish, enamel, etc.

Our super market gives you a choice of paper or plastic bags when you check out at the cashier.

To answer your question Tack, Yup, works on lacquer, varnish, enamel, etc.

That is after they dry.
