Default staining tips needed

I am working with a staff/walking stick I made and I dont want to ruin it
It is a soft White wood/basswood. I have wood burnings/engravings on it and I am wanting them to show thru. Can anyone help with staining tips?
Thanks Tuck

Tuck, I answered your PM on this but will add this....get a piece of spare or scrap basswood and try several different types of stain on it before you go to the piece you really want. You are going, in all probability, do more of these sticks or carvings in the future so even though you may spend a few bucks experimanting with different procedures, it's nice to find out first hand which processes work best for you. You may even find that one type will work for one type of carving and some othe on a different tyoe of carving. Even different types of wood take stains and finishes differently. Nothing like peronal experience to help you decide!

Kim
You can use a wiping stain that will hang up in the ingravings. If the cane is sanded very smooth and not the ingravings, this should make the stain show up nicely. After the stain is good and dry you can use a poly top coat to seal everything. Skip

hummm is this a second posting? I answered too, suggested a golden oak, a rich but light colored stain? I see it is a repeat of the post?
