Default Stain/Finish for a chip carving.

Hello,

Finished a chip carving in basswood and I'd like to finish it in a deep (burgundy/blood/plum/etc) red color stain. Since I've never done this I'd like to find out what y'all use on your chip carvings? How do you prepare it beforehand? What kind of stain? And how to finish/protect it?

Any and all information is greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

S~
