Default stain for cedar - another cedar question!

I am gluing a bunch of cedar together and of course some is lighter than others and some is sapwood. Is there a stain that I could use to even out the color and still let the grain show thru? Or should I do the softwood stain trick where you seal it first then just paint the stain on to look like it was stained?

Sorry to bother everybody about these cedar questions.
