Smile Sizes of Paint Brushes

Hi all!

I will be applying paint to wood on my first 'real' piece very shortly and am curious as to what sizes of paint brushes that you folks use

I imagine a larger brush for the larger areas (clothes, hair, etc...) a medium sized brush for areas like faces, hands, etc... and a smaller brush for the eyes and irises, pupils, and the like?

Are they sold by size number? I've seen advice on this forum to make sure that you go quality before low cost brushes and to keep them maintained, just have no clue on what size and where to get them.

Thanks to all in advance!

Hi Bob,
It is pretty much going to depend on the size of your carving, on the brush size, but for the eyes on my smaller carvings, I use a Leow-Cornell 18/0 7350 Liner brush. It allows you to get into some very tight areas of the carving, especially doing the eyes.

Hope it helps, Tom

Bob,

If you're going to do a fair bit of painting, I would suggesting picking up a nice set from your local arts and crafts or hobby store. Buy the best set you can afford. I think you can find sets with brushes ranging from a 0 or 1 up to a 10 or even 1/2 or 3/4" fairly readily. I would also buy the best detail brush you can afford. I like an 18/0 or 20/0 for fine detail.
