Default Realistic Skin Tones

After reading the excellent article in WCI on painting realistic skin tones, I have been trying to assemble the colors mentioned, but have been unable to find them all in acrylic craft paint. I was wondering if Irish could mention which brand might carry the colors. Thanks.

Manteo,
If you are near a Hobby Lobby they should have the colors. If you can't find the color in one of the three or four brands they carry, Clearcote,Americana, etc., I can't remember the rest of them, try the artists aisle. Within that aisle you will find several different brands of Acrylic Paint. Acrylic paint is the same whether "craft" paint or "artists". They cost more because they are a better grade of paint but you should be able to find them. I couldn't find Brown Madder in the craft paint area but I'm sure I will be able to in the artists.

I use two colors to make flesh....Red Iron Oxide and Yellow Ochre. When I apply them to dampened wood I take into account the color of the wood as it also factors into the end result. If I want the color lighter for some reason like the forehead of a fella with his hat off I'll add a touch of white. If I want the color a little darker say for a native american or the cheeks or nose of a fella whos been out in the sun I'll add a little more of the red. For a five-o'clock shadow I mix up a very thin wash of Midnight Blue . This gives the flesh of my pieces the subtle changes we see in real life, at least I hope it does.

Hey Manteo, My apologizes for being AWOL ...

I use artist quality acrylic and oil paints not craft paints. Most craft paints contain a base coloring as beige, white or some shade of grey. They are not pure color tones. As they are not 'pure' colors the companies create their own names for the color mixes ... midnight blue as compared to cobalt blue or sunset mango in place of cadmium orange deep ....

Artist acrylics and oils are pure color suspended in a float or media. That float is usually transparent or a light tone of yellow (oil coolrs). So the names that I refer to are the common names of artist quality colors.

Try www.dickblick.com or www.jerrysartarama.com for great prices of quality aritsit paints.

Susan,

Isn't the a code , for the colors? Sometimes different brands have different names but the color code on the back allows you to match , them. At least so my teacher Lori told me ....
