Default Purpleheart

Just asking to see what other carvers use on purpleheart? I have used tung oil on all the handles of the knives I have made. I have a few carving in purpleheart in work that are xmas for family members and an unsure how I want to finish them.

Woodcarver ,

I am not very good here, but purpleheart is naturally a beautiful color, and it would seem to me almost a shame to hide any of its color. I think I would consider a clear sealer and then a poly-coat for it. I mean tung oil , BlO, or wax, would either really darnken , or slightly yellow tint it, at least in my opinion.

I made a jewelry box for my daughter from purple heart and used tung oil on it and worked out o.k.

I made a couple of games a few years ago for my daughters at Xmas. using purpleheart and just used a finish of beeswax thinned with turps. Made a pretty good finish and maintained the color of the wood.

Smile Re: Purpleheart

Thanks to all for the usefull ideas. More are welcome. As to Hi HI Hi HO HO Ho maybe you should be the first to get a carved purple heart. Do you all want to vote on it? I will carve it, just let me know where to mail his little wooden heart. Thanks again for all your thoughts and ideas. Even Hi HO, if you can't take it, you shouldn't dish it out. I know I can dish and take it with the best or them. My Dad is the best I know ( 76 and still dishing it ) and still bests myself and all my brothers. Thanks Woodcarver55555
