Default Poly over Stain? Will it work?

Hello All: I am new to the board so please excuse me if I start with a Poly finish question....I have painted a Chair and have sanded thru to give it an OLD look. I also rubbed it down lightly with Dark Stain which really gave it the used look I was looking for. My question is "will poly cover that and seal it?" I know stain is for bare wood, but I sure like the finish and I want to keep it preserved. If all goes well, I will do the table...Bless you in advance.

Welcome!

Without knowing what your base paint is (latex, oil, milk?) under your stain (oil based?) the safest way to go is to use a dewaxed shellac as a barrier coat and then use the finish of your choice. Wipe-on oil based polys (Minwax) are great - easy to apply but take some time to dry. Maybe a lacquer - which is fast but more hazardous to use (do not use lacquer without a barrier coat - you could wrinkle your base coats). As far as waterbased urethanes, there is a great range in durability - if you want to use them, do some research, and use a brand name that's rated as a floor finish.

Nice distressing job btw!
