| | Re: permanent markers for stripes I've had good luck with the gel pens sold for scrapbooking. You can see some of the detailing on the shirt in this one:

| | Re: permanent markers for stripes Be cautious with the Testors pens. they have 2 varieties, the old ones are enamel, new ones acrylic. The enamel is of course petroleum based, and bleeds like crazy. I went to my local hobby shop and all they have is enamel. They won't order more until they sell these. I am going to check Hobby Lobby and Michaels when I get time.

| | Re: permanent markers for stripes IMHO ~ Any marker is going to look like marker, not paint. Solve the problem by getting a REALLY good paint brush, taking care of it and using it for only the small details.
Of course several great brands are available at any art supply store .... not WalMart - lol. I always buy Winsor & Newton Series 7 from Dick Blick when it's on sale. |

| | Re: permanent markers for stripes Jonah... I find that the only way to fly is to experiement, come up with a method that works and then stick it. I use Sharpies, both ultra fine and fine with water based varnish and I never apply the marker unless I've primed and/or finish coated the wood with an acrylic.

| | Re: permanent markers for stripes An interesting thread. I'd like to carve and then paint a Scotsman. I tried recently and the kilt looked as though he'd vomited on it. Still I learned what did n't work, the main reason was I was too ambitious - trying to make it a particular tartan. After reading this thread I'm going to give everything here a try - on scrap wood. I do n't want a corned beef tartan but simply one that looks real.
Thanks to all. |

| | Re: permanent markers for stripes Those are some serious stripes, but then those are some seriously good carvings also. I would love to learn more.

| | Re: permanent markers for stripes The book there is by Michele Carville, parter of Dave Stetson. I believe he does much of the carving, and she does much of the painting, based on my sometimes faulty memory.

| | Re: permanent markers for stripes I "think" that photo says Michele Carville -- she's an incredible painter plus a magnificent carver (who's jealous??). And she's now Mrs. Dave Stetson.
She and Dave have lots of classes available -- They are frequently available at major shows and have them at their home in Phoenix. Check the back of your carving magazine.
Michele and Dave were visiting here (hurrah - what a grand time) a few weeks ago. Oh what a grand time -- playing with knives AND paint brushes. |

| | Re: permanent markers for stripes I found the Testors markers online but Michael's doesn't carry them.....
I am going to try some local hobby shops that specialize in models.
Nancy, you said "series 7 Windsor Newtons"? I have never tried that brand but I know their paints are seriously good....will have to give the brushes a try. | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
