Default permanent markers for stripes

Anybody out there ever use a permanent marker to make lines or stripes on their carving.I did on this one using rose art markers ,they said permanent.Anyway I drew the stripes on his shirt while the carving was dry,I let it sit over night.I then dipped it in BLO and painted it.(wayne Shinlever told me that trick ,really lets the grain come through) The blue from the marker bled into the white for the shirt,Turning it a pale blue but still leaving the lines. It's hard to see in the picture, but it did turn it blue.Would sharpie's be better, or should I try painting with a fine paint brush?or perhaps the BLO was the reason it bled.
Thanks in advance
Jonah

Jonah,

every time i use something other than the same in kind of paint i get bleeding,

i usually paint wet on wet with acrylic only then spray with mat deft,

occasionally i have tried using marker for eye pupils, holes in buttons and other shadow detail, only to have it run when the deft hit it,,

for a while there was a carvers moratorium on blo, lots of folks fussing about it making the carvings yellow and sticky,

recently some folks say blo deft and ?feed? is the way,
heck im bewildered and lost not understanding the other opinions,

so i still keep putting on finishes i don't like the looks of powdery faded colors and spotty from too much color or not enough color...

I haven't had the problem with blo being sticky unless I use krylon matte finish,it stayed sticky for a week till it dryed.I switched to watco satin laquer after the blo had dried a day or two and it dries hard as a rock in no time.
anyway ,I've seen carvings with the scottish kilts that have tons of lines and patterns, and was wondering how they did that.if it's with a paintbrush I don't think my hand would be steady enough or would I have the patience!

Jonah,
I have used Sharpie brand with Minwax poly and it didn't bleed. But, when I used Deft over the Sharpie, it bled. I found a marker used for scrapbooking with no acid that works fine with either poly or Deft. I use them to sign and date mostly, but have used them for detailing that I can't do with a brush. Best thing in my opinion is experiment with different brands and see what you like the best.
Great carving. He looks good in the pic.

Hi Jonah,
The markers are pretty much all oil or petrolium based so anything in that vein, such as linseed oil or oil paint, regular varnish, etc, will make the markers bleed when you use them together. I love what you did with the striping and I have thought of doing the same thing but I use an oil based antiquing solution and the same thing would happen with that. I wish they would make an acrylic marker pen. That would be ideal for us.

Great job on the carving and the paint job. The stripes worked out well, even with the bleeding problem.

old yellowed blo stays sticky for a long time as to my conclusion, and stinks to high heaven while its drying, maybe the clear and the blo were not compatible,

my first dealing with blo was refinishing a gunstock in jr high, dad said oil finishes were best for guns and to make them pretty you needed to hand rub them,
well i out on the blo with a rag and then used a brand new sheep wool shoe shine buff,
talk about a mess, i think that gunstock till today has wool inbeded in the finish,,

i carved one of the first hobos i posted here years ago, it was not painted just sealed wood,
and i had waited about 8 days for it to dry, never the less i stuck pins in it so i could handle it to photograph it. then put it in a plastic box,,, tired of smelling it,

i remember maybe last year one of the Nancy's here did a striped or cross lined outfit on a santa or some caricature and did a tutorial on the how to get the lines straight, her work is beautiful maybe i can find that and it will give a hint,.. ill put it on the to do list..

what i do when i need a very straight line is thin down the paint to a wash, paint glass and scrape a little wet paint on a straight blade, it takes a little practice bit you can use the blade to draw a straight line easier than a brush that has 3 or 4 hairs in it.

found that Nancy_G tutorial, maybe somewhere in it she mentions it,,

If you are going to use Deft, finish the project, spray with Deft, then use the sharpie...and you will be ok

Testors does make Acrylic Paint Markers, kind of like magic markers. They come in a wide variety of colors and have pretty sharp tips. If they are not sharp enough, like most markers, the tip is some kind of fiber and can be trimmed with a blade. They should be available in most any hobby shop that sells model cars.
I have never tried adding detailing to a carving like this. It is on my list to try. Now I learned something from anothers experience. I thing I will try the Testors Markers today.
Thanks,
Bob

Thank you Bob,
I never heard of Testors but I am going to look for them. I can see right now that being able to do fine detail with a marking pen in addition to my painting would be a huge asset. Thanks again for that tip (no pun intended )
