Default Peanut oil for finishing

Hi, any drawbacks to peanut oil? At least here it's only 1/4 of the price of linseed oil so I'll use it if nothing's much wrong with it.

One BIG drawback..............ELEPHANTS! Once they get a whiff of those peanuts, you'd better just get out of the way!

Also, peanut oil can turn rancid over time...It doesn't dry fully like linseed or tung oil.

I think I would worry more about someone having an allergic reaction , some unsuspecting child touching an item that had a peanut oil finish on it, whatever the item is/was.
Just my thought.

Good point, OG.

I wonder if people with nut allergies run into problems with Tung (nut) oil too...

I'm a big believer in mineral oil.

OK, how about peanut oil and turpentine? I hope it'll work, going to test it now - since the cost is, as I said, 1/4 of BLO or any other professional finishing oil I've found. I'll let you know in a few weeks.

Definitely let us know, Henri. I'm very afraid that it will go rancid on you, despite the turpentine. You'll be able to tell if it goes rancid if it picks up a smell, or if it starts to get sticky.

I hope you try it on a piece of scrap before using it on a finished carving! I know everyone has their own method for finishing carvings (BLO, Polyurethane, lacquer, etc.), but I'd hate for you to work so hard on a carving, and have to redo it because the finish turned rancid!
