| | paste wax over poly? Hi,
Just wondering if anyone has applyed clear paste wax over polyurethane for any reason? I just put two coats of satin poly on a basswood relief carving and I'm just wondering how it would look with the paste wax. Thought I'd ask before I try it.

| | Re: paste wax over poly? Hi Chipper...if you've applied two coats of poly, I don't think you should need to put paste wax over it. It should be sealed as well as it needs to be. In the old days, with old varnishes, wax would soften the varnish and cause it to deteriorate. I don't know how that works with modern polyurethane, but you shouldn't need to wax it. |

| | Re: paste wax over poly? chipper, I always like to put some wax over Poli, I use ordinary floor wax with 0000 steel wool, it takes the plastic look away from the Poli, I leave all my carvings natural ,for some reason ,I also like the feeling of it better, just make sure that you immediately polish it ,don;t let it sit to long,

| | Re: paste wax over poly? I agree with Alice. I like to add Floor Past Wax over all my Carvings and Woodburning projects. I think it gives it a nice soft feeling and easy to clean. Just wipe it off with a soft dry cloth.

| | Re: paste wax over poly? I agree that two coats of poly would leave a "plastic" feel, which is why I don't use full strength poly at all. I mix up one part poly, two parts linseed oil, and three parts turpentine and apply that to the raw wood...wipe off all the excess and let it dry for a day...then repeat the process. By the third coat, it has a soft lustrous finish with plenty of moisture protection. Just another technique, we all have our own |

| | Re: paste wax over poly? Let the poly cure for 2 to 3 weeks 1st. Then if there isn't alot of open grain I see no reason why not. If it's highly porous on the other hand, you may end up with alot of residual wax in the pores if you can't buff it out. Use your best judgement, and easy does it. HTH. Marc |

| | Re: paste wax over poly? Why Not Lynn? Just asking!
I have use J and J paste floor wax on several before, but now quit doing so. However, the little bride still likes it on her cottonwood bark carvings after Poly. No ill effects after several years. | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
