No place for painting so figured here was as good as any.

Anybody have and suggestions on good painting books. Airbrush and regular brush. Plan on using acrylics because that's what my daughter gave me about 40 bottles of along with a dozen or so brushes (already had a airbrush). Anyhow need to learn how to use the stuff haven't done so good winging it. Should take a class somewhere but hate school of any kind. Force myself???

That's a tough question, Eddy. There are a million books on painting, all of them worthwhile in their own way. I'd suggest you take a drive to your local art/craft store and thumb through the books there. That way, you can get an idea of what you're getting...of whether it's something you're interested in, etc.

What are you thinking about painting? Carvings? of what?

along these same lines... what is tole painting and does it have any application toward carving? I have seen classes for it in the past and it looks to have something to do with painting wood. I guess I could jump over to google and do a search but that would take a click or two of the mouse and I am here right now :P

Teri - Didn't expect to hear from you, figured you'd be busy playing with your new bandsaw. Guess I need to take a course in how to ask questions - Yes, carvings is what I'm interested in. The shading etc. Globbing on solid colors with sharp differentiation between them I can do, but the shading and smooth transitions from one color to the other - yuk!! is the best description of my results. I plan on visiting the arts/crafts store next time I get to where the closest one is, 75 miles one way, so don't get there often.

DaveE - Tole is laquered enamelware. Don't know what tole painting is, guess you paint the laquered surface, but that don't make any sense. Maybe you paint with laquer on enamel. Better just shut my mouth afore I say something really stupid.

Tole painting can be done with acrylics...and certainly employs alot of shading. If you're interested in learning to blend and shade with acrylics, tole painting books could teach you that - although you'd be painting mostly flowers and the like. But the methods are similar, whether painting flowers, or painting a Santa in the round. I do all my shading during the painting process. I also note that alot of folks do their shading with antiquing medium. Both are good, just depends on what you like.

Yup - gotta a library but the carving/painting stuff is really limited. It's heavy on the standard library stuff; history, fiction, etc. With a pretty good section on animal husbandry and other ranching stuff. Don't understand the ranching stuff cause this is sheep and goat country, but it's there.
