Default Paint bottle holder

I probably have 50 or 75 bottles of acrylic paint stored in small baskets purchased from Wal-Mart or some store close to it. It is anything from ideal. My question is: would you please share with me how I might store paint bottles that will make them orgainzed and easy to read the color label. Can I purchase a rack or do I need to make one?
Thanks
Bill

No suggestions Bill, but I sure will be watching the answer to this one with interest. I've been thinking about breaking down and buying one of those wire carousels for paint bottles.

I've got such great solutions to my organization problems here. X-sailer showing his 'Bucket Tool Holder' that has the carousel holder for carving tools, was just what I needed!! And Thomp's suggestion about the 'bottle size ice cube trays' was perfect for paint brushes and tools 'in use'. Can't wait to see if anyone has the 'perfect' solution to the mountain of paint bottles I have! Deborah

You're spending way too much time in the paint section!! You just don't need to buy that many bottles of paint to produce the colors you need. I have about 15 bottled colors on my table which I use to mix any color I need and half of them are hardly ever used. I admit it's tempting to buy a bottle of the particular color you're looking for but it's a lot more fun to try and mix it yourself. Saves space too and gives you more money for the other things like wood and tools.

Here is a link to a paint caddy we own several of these and they are great for transporting your paint. http://www.woodchipshop.com/servlet/...ry=Paint+Caddy

Great case Vicki! Pricie but effective. And Lynn, you're probably right about mixing your colors from just a few bottles; being colored blind doesn't help that practice though. Basically, with the three primary colors and white, you should be able to create any color in the spectrum. Finding the three "Pure" primary colors can be a problem.

Vicki, that is a great paint caddy! I was just thinking about one of those wire kinds, but I really like that one, it says it holds sixty-eight bottles of paint.....Impressive!!

Lynn, you're absolutely right, it would only take a few bottles of paint to make an endless combinations of colors....however.....and I don't know why, but the reasoning of that just doesn't stay with me.....must be the same kind of short circuit in my brain that keeps me from understanding that I only have two feet and don't need a countless number (I'm afraid to count them!) of pairs of shoes!! Awww, Deborah! I'm disappointed....I thought you were gonna say carving knives. I was all set to buy another to keep the one I just got company. SHUCKS! LOL

Michael's art supplies also carries a wire paint caddy. It holds quite few bottles but my problem is that I store them upside down to cut down on the stuff drying out in the bottles. The Michael's caddy didn't allow that, it stores them on their sides. So I modified my caddy with some bold cutters. I cut it in half and layed the two halves over sideways so the paint could be upright or upside down. I then made a make shift post to mount the two halves on it in two tiers...it was somewhat complicated but it worked out.

Lynn, I agree that you can mix any color you want or need, but you might never match it exactly if you have to mix more. There are so many colors available out there that I adore. I do customize once in a while but only when I can't find exactly what I need already mixed. My time is at a premium right now anyhow. Short cuts are welcome.

Both you, Deborah and Susieq, has a unique way of rationalization. Couldn't have put it better myself, if I was trying to explain my 50 bottles of acrilic paint! How many pairs of shoes do you have Lynn?

bbeery,

i made a paint rack along time ago and still use it today, i used some 1x2 and some thin plywood, mine is 32inches long and about 23 inches tall, i just made a frame with the 1x2 and used a luan plywood forthe back, then took some more 1x2 and made shelves in it with the height of the bottle plus a 1/4" or so for space it holds alot not sure the total count.

hope this helps if it doesnt i will take a pic and post it.
