Default Outdoor carvings

Am wanting to do some spirit carvings on 8-10" logs and put them in the garden. I have done a couple years past and just let them weather out.... turn pretty gray but is ok -- just want to make little "prettier" a little longer. Anyone have good experience with boiled linseed and mineral spirits? Or? Thanks

...a noted chainsaw carver in my area uses varnish, something he swears by and they seem to hold up quite well...don't know what type or shade...
