Last night I finished a plaque with tung oil. When I woke up this a.m., a little dog hair had floated through the air and landed on my plaque...and set....NICELY. I lightly brushed it with steel wool. Nope. Darn. Any way I can get that out without gouging? I'm tempted to get one of those food umbrellas to keep flies off. Hope someone can help me! TY for whatever help you can lend! Dakota

You might try very carefully picking it off with a single edge razor blade. Then you might have to steel wool the area and apply more tung oil.

For future reference, the umbrella idea is a good one. For flat work like a plaque, set up a couple blocks something thicker than your plaque by an inch or so, one on either side, and cover with somthing flat- another board? Piece of acrylic? Cardboard? Make sure the cover is clean, it will allow air flow so your finish can dry, but keep 99% of those pesky airborne items out.

You have both my sympathies and my condolences. I think I'll start with a cardboard box, cut some large holes and glue-gun some screen "windows". My assistant has a compulsion to roll around on my tools and wood shavings on the bench. As a result, there is cat hair on and in just about everything. So far, I haven't noticed any hair in the finishes (as he picks half a dozen fine, fine hairs off this computer keyboard.). |

Actually, no. Actually have a stiff cardboard box that she's never used for a playhouse. However, there have been some days when she's been an unbelievable pest on the bench. Hair/fur all over the place and it's so fine compared with greasy brown hair from the Chesapeakes. Then she trots upstairs with her fur full of chips & shavings. Good thing I'm a lousy housekeeper. |
