| | New Sandpaper/film? Anyone ever try the new (new to me!) sanding "film" from Japan Woodworker? I just lately discovered it and my order for a few sheets arrived and I tried it on the new cane shaft. Awesome!!!
I wet sanded with a mixture of BLO, turps and varnish and what a finish!!! The grits are amaizing, literally forms a slurry of particles, fills the pores of the wood and what a smooth finish. Grits are ..... 80, 120, 180, 140, 400, 600, 1200, 2500, and 9000. The 1200, 2500 and 9000 are more for sharpening steel, but what a finish they put on wood!!!

| | Re: New Sandpaper/film? Was told about it by a friend who makes canes, was admiring the finish on them, deep, lusterous shine, and asked how he achieved it. The only supplier is http://japanwoodworker.com so I ordered a bit to try. Interesting stuff! Interesting material and feel to it. Great tools in their catalogue too.

| | Re: New Sandpaper/film? I looked at the site and they mentioned 3M sandpaper. You would think that would be offered at other locations maybe even in local areas. Next time I'm out and about I going to check on availability without having to pay shipping. I also work stone and I know better stuff is out there. Certainly not at Home Depot but somewhere. Boy their tools looked good didn't they? I'm assuming the gouge tang is backed up by the end steel cap at the handle EOP. |

| | Re: New Sandpaper/film? Hello all,
3M does make an abrasive film, too. It's awesome but a little hard to find. While I've not used it for sanding carvings, I do use it for a series of honing/stropping devices. I applied the 3M film to some 12x12 sheets of plexiglass, then cut them in 2"x6" rectangles with a sabre saw. I used three progressively finer grits--ending with about 2500. It does put an awesome finish edge on carving tools. There's only one catalogue that I found it in--will try to find it and post more info (I have total recall...just not instant recall--it's an age thing!) I originally found it in a jewelery supply catalogue--but there is a woodworking supply catalogue that offers it. We discussed in an old post a couple of years ago.

I have been using Klingspor which I really like as it has a cloth backing and is really flexable.
and comes in all grits.

| | Re: New Sandpaper/film? Hi I am not really a carver more of a woodturner that has been looking into doing some carveing on his turnings. For the ulimate in sanding try micro-mesh. http://www.woodchipshome.com/mm5/mer...egory_Code=MM8
Charles at woodchips has the best price to be found. This product was originally created to polish aircraft windshields but many turners use it to sand wood or rub out finish to a flawless gloss. It may seem expensive but I usually only replace it about every year. | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
