Yessss, it worked! If you click on the picture it should enlarge and you can get a better idea how nicely the Formby's brings out the woodgrain, even in basswood. I've tried other finishes and really like the Formby's the best of anything, for unpainted wood that is. For painted pieces I prefer to use a water soluble varnish! Deborah</IMG>

Very nice looking piece Callynn and very original too ,
you mean there is no stain under the Formby's? it did turn out a bit yellow alright for what you wanted it, just the right color for skin tones.
thanks for showing
Alice

Deborah I have been trying to get some pictures in here to show you the different look between the Poly oil/water it sure makes a difference especially on Pine or any light colored wood, I shall try again, I usual don't have trouble posting?? here ,on your left, spalted Birch with waterborne poly and on your right Pine with Oil poly you see how clear and white the Birch stayed?

Very nice Alice, there is a huge difference in the color, do you think it was due to the products of the softness/hardness of the woods? What is birch considered?

I learned early on about how stains take, not with carvings, but with a set of pine shelves I built. I had used the stain before, on a hardwood and it turned out so well I decided to use the same stain on my pine shelves.....what a mess.....they didn't even look stained, they looked painted, the stain took so deeply!!

No, there isn't any stain on the fairy, it's just Formby's Tung Oil Varnish. It looks darker in the picture actually, the color is a very, very good 'flesh toned' color.

Thanks for sharing the photos of your work (especially since it was a pain getting them posted!), they are really lovely pieces! Deborah

Thanks for the compliment Deborah
the Birch is already spalted and it has hard and soft areas. basically, this is white Birch it can be hard, I would not know with what other wood I could compare it. of coarse White Pine is soft , very hard to stain, there is a system to it ,I forgot ,I will tell you when I find it. lol Pine starts out very white and it really turns into a beautiful golden color over time.
