We can learn from our mistakes. Can't we? If this is true then we can learn from other folks mistakes too. I personally think it would be easier to learn from other folks mistakes. Who has spent time carving a nice piece, only to ruin it in the finishing process? I suspect that we all have. My most recent screw up was staining a carved piece without first "conditioning" it. Of course it came out all blotchy. Lesson to be learned, apply wood conditioner to Basswood that will be stained. Lets hear some other screw ups, so we can all learn from them. Thanks, Tom H |

I've had several episodes of laying on a coat of poly before the acrylic paint had fully cured (not just dried) and had the finish go milky. Sometimes it resolved after several days but a couple needed to be stripped and redone. Worse one was grabbing a can of what I thought was clear poly, because the cap was clear when I picked it of the shelf and it said "satin". Anyway my first coat of "clear" poly was WHITE! H I HAD TO STRIP THAT FISH RIGHT DOWN TO BARE WOOD AND REPAINT AN BELIEVE ME FROM THEN ON I do a test spray before I go anywhere near a carving! |
