Identifying colors Next month, at the SDC/Ozark Mtn. Woodcarvers Seminar, I will begin work on a gyrfalcon. I have found a source relating data from 42 male and 63 female specimens. Unfortunately, it was from circa 1935 and some of the colors referenced are ones I have never heard of, or can't find any information on, relating to modern colors. I would appreciate any information any of you painters could give me on:
chaetura black
chaetura drab
deep neutral gray
cartridge buff
fuscous
avellaneous
dark olive brown
hair brown
plumbeous
fuscous black
drab
These colors were all capitalized in the text so I assume that they were recognized colors. At other times the authors would state something like Chaetrua Black with a cream wash.
The information I did glean from the article is great. They list the Max/Min sizes from birds collected in 6 different geographical areas along with the average for the entire group, divided by male and female, for 5 different body parts. This along with past articles from Wildfowl Carving Magazine, Scholz's "Birds of Prey", a falconer who has male gyrfalcons, measurements from Cornell's Ornithological Laboratory, and lots of photos pulled from the internet, I am beginning to feel comfortable with everything except the colors.
Any help with either the colors or a lead to someone outside of wood carving that might could assist me would be greatly appreciated. |
