Exclamation Help With Wax

Hi everyone,

I have a piece of woodburning flatwork that I need to remove the wax from as I want to make a couple of changes in the piece. How do I do this? Would I use a razor to scrape it off?

Suggestions, tips, miracles welcome.

I'd try mineral spirits first...then lacquer thinner. Just use it lightly because I don't know how it will affect the burning! Mineral spirits (paint thinner) shouldn't affect it. While the solvent in most woodworking waxes is mineral spirits, depending on how long it's been dried, it may no longer remove it. The lacquer thinner should remove it though...but I'd test it in an hidden spot!

Lindy,

I would purchase some wax remover. It is designed to break down wax , it works well and leaves the piece very clean. It will be faster and much less residue.

Thanks Bob & Ash!

I'll try the wax remover first and if that doesn't work on to more aggressive ways. The piece is just finished and it is another Spitfire and I finally realized that the drawing I was working from was wrong!!!! So I pilled down some actual photos from the net and I need to fix this before I give it to my friend who is not only another Spitfire fan but also a military pilot. I'm thinking he just might find that mistake.

Thanks again for your help & advice.

I've used chemical sanders to remove wax . The last time that I needed to remove wax was from a teak beam. I used snappy teak which worked very well . I was quite surprised .
